Oil Paint is a classic popular medium that became well established by 1810 as the prime painting medium in Italy. It is incredibly versatile and so responsive because it dries slowly and can be modified on the surface of the canvas for quite sometime. Oils may be used straight out of the tube, or linseed oil can be added for smoother manipulations. Fresh layers can be added on top of dry ones without modifying the colors below. One characteristic that sets oil paint apart from other mediums is its richness and depth of color. This is because the pigments are ground in a drying oil that has a relatively high refractive index (the amount of light it reflects and absorbs). This is the final and most advanced medium explored at Elise’s Studio.
