Acrylic

Time is not the enemy with acrylics. Think of the fast drying characteristics of the medium as an invitation to paint and repaint, until you see something you like. | Brad Faegre

Introduction to Acrylics

Acrylic is such a versatile medium, which American artists first started experimenting with in the 1940s. It is so well suited for large format work and the styles of the early to mid 20th century, which included abstract expressionism. It took longer for figurative artists, who traditionally used oil paints, almost exclusively, to try and appreciate it. The medium is well suited for a spontaneous approach to painting and requires multiple layers. However, the figurative artist can benefit from painting with it as well. I choose to teach it before oil painting, because it’s a better choice for young to intermediate students, as it is fast drying and only requires paint and water. It also cleans up nicely.
